Community Award Winner - Wazida

‘Empower Her at Herbert Thompson Primary School’ led by Wazida Khatun’

The Empower Her group is an extraordinary example of a community support network that has grown organically, strengthened through shared experience and transformed lives across the Ely and Caerau community. What began as a small gathering of women meeting in the family room over a cup of tea has evolved into a thriving group of nearly twenty members who uplift, encourage and inspire one another every single week. These women, all learning English as an Additional Language (EAL), first came together to share stories, culture and mutual support. Their bond quickly deepened, creating a safe and welcoming space where confidence could grow and friendships could flourish. As their group expanded, so did their ambitions.

In conversation with the Family Engagement Officer, they expressed a desire to improve their lives, gain qualifications and eventually return to work but language remained a barrier. With determination and encouragement, the group enrolled in a year long ESOL course delivered by Cardiff and Vale College. Their progress was remarkable. Their English improved, their confidence grew and their sense of possibility widened. Supported by the Community Focused Schools Manager, they secured funding to continue their cooking sessions, sharing cultural recipes and building practical skills together. This became a cornerstone of their journey and a blend of learning, community and empowerment.

This year, the Empower Her ladies took another step forward by completing a “Get Cooking” course with local dietitians. Those who were ready progressed to the Level 1 Community Food and Nutrition accreditation, a significant achievement that reflects their commitment to healthier living for themselves and their families. Their shared learning has inspired positive change in their homes, their routines and their aspirations. Their impact is not only collective but deeply personal. One member has progressed to college to train as a qualified hairdresser. Another has secured employment as a childcare practitioner in Herbert Thompson’s reception class. These successes are a testament to the group’s encouragement, resilience and belief in one another.

The Empower Her group embodies the spirit of community empowerment. They support each other, celebrate each other and push one another to grow. They have transformed from a small social circle into a powerful force for change for themselves, their families and their community. With Level 2 courses beginning in September and hopes of volunteering or working in school kitchens or as dinner supervisors, their journey is only just beginning. For their unity, their courage, their achievements and their unwavering commitment to bettering their lives and the lives of their children, the Empower Her ladies are truly deserving of the Volunteer Community Group of the Year award.

Leyton Smith - Trustee/Coordinator of the Year: Recognises those who lead, support and coordinate volunteers

Leyton Smith – Trustee for ACE

It is hard to quantify the number of community members who benefit from Leyton’s involvement of ACE, he is part of the board of trustees who influence the decision and direction ACE makes and goes. They are all Exceptional people, however, this year Leyton has Leyton has been an active trustee for ACE for the past 5+ years, he was an active member of the patient participation group and he is a positive mentor for the ACE’s Partnerships team and the development of health related projects for under represented groups of people, especially the well needed Men’s Group.

In his role as an ACE trustee Leyton mentors and advocates for the ACE staff team, he attends many of the health and non health related events and activities to show support to the team. At these events Leyton promotes other projects; gives time to listen to the community; shows much compassion and truly understands the needs of the community in order to create solutions with people. It is hard to quantify how many people benefit from this engagement from Leyton. However, at an ACE Community Event Leyton will walk around speaking to the community for the whole event (sometimes 3+ hours). Leyton always shows a massive amount of appreciation to the staff and volunteers of ACE for the work they do, he sends emails of gratitude, always, I mean always has time for staff to talk through ideas to unpick solutions and he importantly does it with a smile on his face and encouragement from his heart.

All of the Trustees of ACE are exceptional and we as a staff team appreciate them all. However, this year we as a whole ACE team wanted this year to highlight Leyton. He has gone above and beyond his role of just a trustee who attends a board meeting once a month, he has, this year inspired us as a staff team, and we have felt utterly supported by Leyton. From the ACE Director ‘Leyton has been a trustee for ACE for 5+ years. Board meetings very much deal with governance and strategy, Leyton has a great quality whereby he is able to bring his extensive knowledge of the wider community into the board discussions and keeping true to ACE’s core values and principles.’ I can speak from my heart when I say Leyton’s support, guidance and compassion towards myself, the ACE Team and all of the community makes this place a better, more inspiring and loved place to work and live. Thank you Leyton for this.

With support from C3SC and WCVA.
